Newcastle Helix
One of the standout projects in Newcastle is the District Energy Centre at Newcastle Helix. This state-of-the-art facility uses CHP technology to provide efficient and sustainable energy to the entire site. By utilising low-carbon energy sources, the District Energy Centre significantly reduces the carbon footprint of Newcastle Helix, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation . Engie has played a key role in managing and operating this energy centre, showcasing its expertise in sustainable energy solutions.
Project Overview:
- The Energy Centre covers: 732 sqm.
- Providing 10MW of heating
- 5MW of cooling
- 8MVA of power to the connected buildings on the site
- via 5.2km of buried network
Byker District Heating System
The Byker District Heating System, originally installed in the 1970s, provides heating and hot water to homes and buildings on the Byker estate. Since 2012, significant upgrades have been made to improve efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.
Project Overview:
- Includes 1 MW biomass and CHP boilers.
- Replaced 5.6 km of pipes and 13 heat transfer stations.
- Improved reliability and no heat charge increases since 2012.
- Installing modern heating controls and equipment in homes.
- Considering additional biomass or CHP boiler installation.
South Tyneside’s Renewable Energy Initiatives

West Holborn Renewable Energy Network (WHREN)

- Uses heat from flooded mines and the River Tyne.
- Powers Council and public sector buildings in South Shields.
- Estimated at over £20 million, with external funding sought.
- Cuts 2,436 tonnes of carbon annually.
- Saves over £800,000 yearly.
Viking Energy Network Jarrow
The Viking Energy Network in Jarrow is the first of its kind in the UK. On this project, Colloide acted as Principal Contractor for South Tyneside Council. This innovative network harnesses low-grade heat from the River Tyne.
Project Overview:
- Combines river source heat pumps, CHP, solar farm, and battery storage.
- Powers council buildings, including a leisure centre and town hall.
- Reduces emissions by 1,035 tonnes annually.
- Supported by a £4.6m ERDF grant.
- Potential to connect more buildings, including schools and hospitals.
Hebburn’s Renewable Energy Centre
The Paul Younger Centre in Hebburn is a new Renewable Energy Centre designed to provide sustainable heating to local buildings and residents, contributing to South Tyneside’s carbon neutrality goals. Vital Energi and Driver Group were instrumental on the build of this scheme.
Project Overview:
- Utilises air source heat pumps after initial plans for mine water pumps were revised.
- Heats Hebburn Central and Durham Court, with future expansion possible.
- Reduces emissions by 319 tonnes annually.
- Total project cost is £7.7 million, with 50% funded by ERDF.
- Supports carbon neutrality by 2030.
