On 9th– 14th June Colloide created awareness for Men’s Health Week 2025. Men’s Health Week is dedicated to raising awareness of men’s overall health including physical, mental and emotional, to support the wellbeing of men and boys.

At Colloide, we understand the strong connection between mental and physical health and promote giving both equal priority. Men’s Health Week plays a key role in creating a space where discussions about well-being are accepted and supported.

Colloide’s Part in Men’s Health Week

Colloide raised awareness this Men’s Health Week by hosting a lively darts competition followed by a BBQ in our Limavady offices, which took place on 10th June. The event was designed to raise awareness about the importance of men’s health among staff members whilst also providing an opportunity for employees to unwind, connect and enjoy themselves in a relaxed setting. The darts competition encouraged friendly competition and laughter among staff members, with 28 staff participating. Many showcased their dart-throwing skills, but Shea Martin took home the trophy and prize for a second year running! Following the darts competition, Colloide hosted a BBQ, where staff members enjoyed delicious burgers and hotdogs during an extended lunch in the sunshine. This informal setting encouraged conversations and bonding among, reinforcing the importance of taking time to socialise and prioritise mental well-being.

Colloide’s Commitment to Men’s Health All Year Round

At Colloide, men’s health is a priority every day of the year, not just during Men’s Health Week. Our trained Mental Health First Aiders provide initial support, guidance, and reassurance to colleagues facing mental health challenges, offering advice and directing them to suitable resources and professional help. We also organise monthly Brew Monday events, creating opportunities for staff to connect over a cuppa. Physical health and safety are equally valued, with our dedicated health and safety team working to identify and address risks, ensuring a safe working environment daily.

The Importance of Men’s Health

It is important to ensure physical, mental, and emotional well-being of males and boys. It is essential to stay alert and address any health concern’s as this can lead to early diagnosis whilst potentially saving lives and improving overall quality of life.

Men’s Health Week  also emphasises the significance of discussing emotions and seeking professional advice. It aims to raise awareness about the challenges men face when addressing their mental health and encourages open conversations. Stress, anxiety, and other mental health struggles have a significant effect on overall wellbeing, and it is important to seek guidance and help where needed.

These startling statistics highlights the importance of creating awareness and breaking the  stigma.

  • 1 in 5 men die before age 65.
  • 4 in 5 suicides are male
  • Men are more likely to ignore health issues
  • Many in construction and transport face serious health risks
  • Stress, depression or anxiety accounted for 55% of all working days lost due to ill health in 2021/22.

The DIY Man MOT

The Men’s Health Forum developed the DIY Man MOT as a straightforward health check to encourage men to proactively manage their wellbeing. It offers an effective method to assess overall health and spot potential warning signs needing medical attention. The DIY Man MOT uses five simple steps, each focusing on a key area of health.

  1. Checking your “engine”: this is evaluating heart health through pulse monitoring, assessing both resting pulse and recovery rate.
  2. Checking whether you are “overloaded”: this check includes checking your weight using waist measurements based on height.
  3. Checking your “dashboard for warning lights”: this check is to give attention to any potential warning signs such as changes in moles, unexplained shortness of breath, unexplained pain or persistent coughs, which serve as indicators of possible further medical issues.
  4. Check the “water”: this is relating to checks on urinary health to detect any unusual changes.
  5. Check your “pressure”: this check involves monitoring blood pressure; this can be done at most GP’s offices’ where a machine is often found to provide accurate readings.

By following this DIY health check, men can better understand their physical health and detect signs of poor wellbeing early. This can lead to quicker treatment and improved outcomes, allowing men to take control of their health and reduce the risk of developing serious medical conditions.
