Viking Energy Network Jarrow Wins at RICS 2024

We are delighted to announce that the Viking Energy Network Jarrow (VENJ) has won the prestigious Public Sector Project Award at the RICS Awards Grand Final 2024, which took place on 04 October at the Park Plaza Riverbank in London. This event celebrated the UK’s most outstanding and inspirational built projects that are having a transformative impact on the communities they serve.

The RICS Awards bring together some of the UK’s most remarkable projects in the built environment, recognising those that are innovative, sustainable, and community-focused. The competition was fierce, with top projects from across the country going head-to-head in a range of categories, and it is a huge honour for South Tyneside Council‘s Viking Energy Network Jarrow to have been selected as a standout winner in the Public Sector Project category.

Viking Energy Network Jarrow

The Viking Energy Network in Jarrow is the first of its kind in the UK. On this project, Colloide acted as Principal Contractor for South Tyneside Council. This innovative network harnesses low-grade heat from the River Tyne.

Project Overview:
  • Combines river source heat pumps, CHP, solar farm, and battery storage.
  • Powers council buildings, including a leisure centre and town hall.
  • Reduces emissions by 1,035 tonnes annually.
  • Supported by a £4.6m ERDF grant.
  • Potential to connect more buildings, including schools and hospitals.
