District Heating in Ireland has moved from ambition to delivery

Colloide reflects on a landmark IrDEA conference and the exciting future of district heating in Ireland.

Colloide was proud to sponsor this year’s Irish District Energy Association (IrDEA) conference, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, developers and energy experts to discuss the future of district heating in Ireland.

For the first time, the conference was sold out, and there was a real sense throughout the day that the industry has reached a significant turning point.

District heating in Ireland is no longer just an ambition. It is happening, and we are now entering the delivery phase.

With significant government investment, nine projects receiving pre-construction funding and growing collaboration across the sector, the foundations are now in place to turn years of planning into real projects.

As a Northern Ireland-based engineering company with extensive experience delivering district heating projects across the UK, we are particularly excited about the opportunities ahead and the role we can play in supporting the development of the industry here in Ireland.

A significant milestone for district heating in Ireland

One of the biggest announcements of the day came from Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Darragh O’Brien, who confirmed that nine district heating projects have been awarded €5 million in pre-construction funding.

This is a significant milestone for the sector and a testament to the hard work and dedication of organisations across the industry over many years. The funding will give project sponsors, investors and customers greater confidence to progress their projects and take the next steps towards delivery.

The Minister also announced a further €100 million in funding, on top of the €100 million already committed, providing a significant boost to the development of district heating in Ireland.

Speaking at the conference, Minister O’Brien highlighted the important role district heating will play in Ireland’s energy security, climate ambitions and decarbonisation targets.

With energy security, affordability and decarbonisation becoming increasingly important, district heating has a vital role to play in Ireland’s future energy infrastructure.

Congratulations to all nine projects receiving funding. This is a hugely positive step forward, and we look forward to seeing these projects progress from development into construction and, ultimately, operation.

The announcements made at the conference demonstrate a clear commitment to the sector. The focus is now shifting from what district heating could achieve in Ireland to making it happen.

Bringing real-world experience to the conversation

Our Managing Director, Paddy McGuinness, was delighted to speak at the conference, sharing Colloide’s experience of delivering district heating infrastructure and discussing what these projects look like in practice.

Drawing on our experience delivering projects including Bunhill 2 Energy Centre, Viking Energy Network Jarrow and Bloomsbury Heat & Power Network, Paddy shared practical insights into the challenges, opportunities and considerations involved in delivering district heating schemes.

As Ireland moves towards the delivery of its first major district heating projects, we believe there is a real opportunity to learn from established networks across the UK and further afield.

Having been involved in the design and delivery of these projects, we understand the importance of early collaboration, practical engineering solutions and bringing contractors into the process at the right time.

Sharing lessons learned from previous projects can help identify challenges early, inform design decisions and support more efficient delivery.

We believe Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) is particularly important in achieving this. Bringing experienced engineering and construction partners into projects early can help ensure that designs are practical, risks are identified and opportunities for innovation are explored before projects reach the construction stage.

As a company based in Northern Ireland, we are ideally placed to support the growing district heating sector in Ireland, bringing our experience from UK projects while working closely with local developers, consultants and project teams.

Collaboration will be key to delivering Ireland’s ambitions

One of the most encouraging aspects of the conference was the enthusiasm and commitment from everyone in the room. It was clear that there is a collective determination to make district heating a success in Ireland.

We were delighted to have a stand at the event and thoroughly enjoyed meeting people from across the industry, discussing current projects, sharing experiences and exploring opportunities to work together.

As the sector moves into the delivery phase, collaboration between developers, contractors, consultants, local authorities and other industry partners will be essential.

At Colloide, we are keen to build on the relationships made at the conference and work alongside organisations across the sector. We believe that sharing knowledge and experience, particularly from projects already delivered, will be crucial in helping Ireland establish a successful district heating industry.

We also heard about and recognise that there are challenges to overcome, including the electricity spark gap and the wider commercial considerations associated with developing district heating networks.

However, we believe that progressing projects and addressing these challenges should happen in parallel. Ireland is at an early stage in developing its district heating industry, and there will inevitably be lessons to learn along the way.

By drawing on the experience of other countries, sharing knowledge and working collaboratively, the industry can develop practical solutions while maintaining momentum.

District heating does not need to be perfect from day one. What matters is continuing to progress projects, learning from experience and building the infrastructure needed to support Ireland’s long-term energy ambitions.

A huge thank you and well done to everyone involved

We would like to congratulate Pauline O’Reilly and her team at IrDEA, David Connolly and his team at HeatGrid, SEAI and all the IrDEA Board members on delivering such a successful and engaging conference.

The event provided a fantastic opportunity to hear from a wide range of speakers and panellists, covering everything from policy and funding to practical project delivery and workforce development.

The quality of the discussions, the engagement from the audience and the enthusiasm in the room were particularly encouraging. The fact that the room remained packed right through to the closing remarks was a real reflection of the interest and commitment across the industry.

It was also encouraging to hear the shared ambition to establish district heating as a new utility in Ireland and the recognition of the role it can play in supporting the country’s energy security, reducing carbon emissions and helping manage energy costs.

Looking ahead: From planning to delivery

The conference marked an important moment for district heating in Ireland. With significant funding announced, projects progressing and strong collaboration across the sector, the industry is now moving from planning to delivery.

At Colloide, we are excited about what lies ahead and are proud to be part of this journey.

As a Northern Ireland-based engineering company with a proven track record in delivering district heating projects across the UK, we are keen to bring our experience closer to home and support the development of Ireland’s district heating networks.

We believe that early contractor involvement, collaboration and sharing lessons learned from projects already delivered will be key to making these schemes a success.

We are keen to work with developers, consultants and project sponsors as projects move into the design and build stages, helping turn plans into practical, deliverable solutions.

If you are developing a district heating project in Ireland and would like to discuss how our experience could support you, we would be delighted to hear from you.

The enthusiasm and commitment across the industry are clear. The funding is being made available, projects are progressing, and district heating is becoming a reality in Ireland.

We look forward to playing our part in making it happen.
